For my latest plumbing adventure, I need to be able to cut a 1/2" diameter cpvc pipe. I want to install a cold water shut off valve so that I can cut off the water supply to my hot water without having to shut off water to my entire house. I also need to cut two 1/2" diameter copper pipes because they are leaking. One of these pipes is a hot water supply, the other a cold one. I will be installing Sharkbite fittings on each pipe so that I can join copper to cpvc, so I need a smooth, even cut for both pipes.
I bought the HDX Large Diameter Mini Tube Cutter from an area Home Depot store. It fits 1/8" to 1 1/8" inch pipes and is supposed to cut both cpvc and copper with ease. This cutter was $10.98 before tax. I chose this model because it is supposed to fit in tight, close areas where you have little space to work. It went onto the pipe easily, and adjusted easily.
After making 20+ rotations around the cpvc pipe it had barely begun to make a track in the pipe. I gave up and went to my local Wal-Mart which is about 2 miles from my house and picked up a hacksaw and blade to be able to get the job done quickly and easily. I wish I had kept the packaging because I would have returned this pipe cutter for a refund. The blade is simply not sharp enough to do the job.
